“Southern Fictions”

I was lucky to work on a fine press edition book project in the winter of 2010-11 called “Southern Fictions” a book of poems by Kathryn Stripling Byer, published by Jacar Press in an edition of 100 chapbooks. I collaborated with Dave Wofford (of Horse and Buggy Press) to produce the cover paper. He designed, printed and bound the book. Dave proposed the idea that we use a confederate flag as the base pulp for the covers, based on an image in one of Kay’s poems. Following is a chronicle of the transformation of the flag into sheets of paper. Once the red, white and blue of the flags were mixed together in the hollander beater, they created a lovely, pink tone. Much pinker than I anticipated. We bound the edition in 1/2 pink “flag” paper and 1/2 natural flax paper.
